Sebastião de Vargas – Cavaleiro da Casa Real no século XVI
Author: Dr. António Horta Correia
Categories: Biographies and Memoirs , History
A biographical study of enormous quality, which invites the reader on a journey through time to the 16th century.
The work describes the life of a knight of the Royal House, Sebastião de Vargas, a cultured, literate man, knowledgeable in the art of numbers and the customs of the Moors, who also served with the lance in the garrison of Tangier.
At the age of nine he went to Lisbon to be a boy in the chapel of D. João II, and during the thirty years of D. Manuel's reign he held positions of responsibility, such as alfaqueque and storekeeper in Tangier, treasurer at Casa da India and Mina and secretary of the governor of India, however, in the time of D. João III, after a long exile, he suffered royal oblivion as payment for the valuable diplomatic work performed in the kingdom of Fez, where he represented the King before an enemy nation, only protected by fragile truces always ready to break.
It could be the subject of a novel, but it is the historical and well-documented reality of a Portuguese knight.
