This novel ends a story taking place in the village of Estoi, Municipality of Faro, Algarve, in the four decades prior to the 25th of April. Fiction goes hand in hand with historical facts, trying at the same time to describe the architectural and cultural richness of the region in question. A young man is born in the Barrocal Algarve, the son of a rural woman who suffered from tuberculosis. From a very early age, this young man realizes that school is where his future lies. And not in the countryside, where his “adopted” uncle wanted to condemn him to a life of submission. He falls in love with a girl from a well-off family, with social aspirations, and she stops him from dating. This rejection, combined with his rebellion, leads him to leave the farm, come and live in the village and work in the city, as a journalist's apprentice. This condition leads him to embark on some opposition to the regime, irrationally convinced that he was immune to repression. After acquiring some financial peace of mind, life went smoothly when he was harassed by PIDE. Forced to flee, he is captured and imprisoned in Caxias, where he remains while remembering this story, until April 25th. After the release of political prisoners, he is reunited with his beloved.
